Portfolios Overtones In Their Own Words Landscapes I Landscapes II People We Dream Alone Southwest Still Life I Still Life II |
More than merely a record of place, a reflection of who is behind the camera, or the making of a metaphorical statement; I think landscape photography, above all, retains or enforces our affection for life on earth. Sometimes time spent with a photograph of a landscape shows us more than if we saw the place itself. We have the benefit of the transition process, and the unification of what was there. This provides us with an opportunity to comprehend what may have been in- comprehensible in the messiness of the original scene. For the photographer, who has to work with what is there before him or her, it is an opportunity to bring chaos to order. We bring formal elements into play to validate what we see as a potential work. This structuring gives us the best chance of communicating what we see and feel and wish to share through our pictures. Photographs have to be personal or the results will not be persuasive. Only the artist's presence in the work affirms the experience of seeing the place through their eyes. "How little subject matter counts in the ultimate reaction" - Edward Weston. |
